the thing about lotr that the movies don’t convey so fully is how the story is set in an age heavily overshadowed by all the ages before. they’re constantly traveling through ruins, discussing the glory of days gone by, the empires of men are much diminished, the elves (especially galadriel) are described as seeming incongruent, frozen in time….some of the imagery is even near-apocalyptic, like the ruins of moria and of course the landscape surrounding mordor
this is a strange thought to me, somehow: that the archetypal “high fantasy” story is set at the point where the…fantasy…used to be much higher? this is not the golden age; this is a remnant
LotR is Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome of the elves.
i want to emphasize that people have added excerpts of their theses in reply to this post but this is still my favorite reblog
One thing I find hilarious about Star Trek ‘09 is how out of touch Spock seems with Terran relationships to weather.

He stranded Jim on Delta Vega in the Vulcan equivalent of “I know what’ll get him, the bratty asshole, snow. That’ll really teach him his place. Good thinking, commander Spock, ten points to you” knowing full well that it was, indeed, a harsh, cold climate.
And then Jim, in true Kirk fashion, said “fuck you mister Spock, my good bitch, I’m from Iowa” and put on a pair of gloves, because the denizens of the North American Midwest regularly make choices between breathing and being able to feel their face for at least five months of the year, and damn if Delta Vega’s only a little chilly in comparison.
Chang'E-4: The Yutu-2 rover isn’t wasting any time, & has driven away from the lander toward (but not into) a nearby crater. Reminder that all photos from the far side of the moon are being relayed to earth by the Queqiao spacecraft, which is parked in a halo orbit around the Earth-Moon L2 point, about 61,500km behind the moon. “Halo orbit” means it’s about that far behind the moon, but always off to one side or the other from the actual L2 point so it has a line of sight to the Earth. Wouldn’t be much of a relay otherwise.
Give me a post-Fusion mini-story where Samus has to deal with another infant of Ridley’s species and is torn between the ideas of blowing its brains out to save everyone some trouble, or trying really hard to raise it with some understanding of right and wrong.
A compilation of all that is cyberpunk and netrunner.
